A question for you:

Wouldn’t it be amazing if your printed flashcards could talk?!

Think about it – you wouldn’t have to wonder anymore if you’re reading Hebrew words correctly, if you’re pronouncing the transliterations properly, or emphasizing the right syllable. Flashcards with sound would eliminate all the guess work, and work wonders for helping you increase your Hebrew vocabulary.

What if I told you that these talking flashcards exist?!

I didn’t create them (but I sure wish I had!) – that credit goes to Linguacious, a company that creates innovative talking flash cards in different languages. I was fortunate enough to get a set of Around the Home Hebrew Flashcards to review, so I’m sharing my thoughts with you!

For the most part, these are typical Hebrew flashcards, with an image on the front, and the word in Hebrew; the words actually appear twice, both with and without niqqud (vowels). The images are clear enough, so you know what they are without having any English on the cards at all.

These Around the Home Hebrew Flashcards include an assortment of 52 items you’ll find around the house, from furniture to utensils to clothing to technology, and more. The collection is a bit random, but they are all things that exist in our homes – or at least in my home!

What sets these Hebrew flashcards apart from others is the QR Code. When you scan the code with the free Linguacious app, that downloads in just a couple of minutes, the app pronounces the Hebrew word! This works whether you scan the large QR code on the back of the cards, or the smaller one on the front.

Okay, so no the flashcards themselves don’t talk – but they come pretty close! The app scans the card in seconds, and pronounces the Hebrew words very clearly. It’s a perfect vocabulary tool for anyone with little to no Hebrew background, and is great for adults and children alike. The Around the Home Hebrew Flashcards also include ideas for games and activities, so you can take your Hebrew studies to a more engaging level.

Will the Around the Home Hebrew Flashcards teach you to speak Hebrew? No – I don’t know of any flashcards that can work that kind of magic. They will, however, teach you lots of Hebrew vocabulary words, which you can incorporate into your daily life. Instead of asking your child to put something on the table or in their backpack, you’ll be able to ask them to put something on the shulchan (שולחן) or in their tiq gav (תיק גב). These little words might not seem like much, but there’s a quote that says “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Take a step!
